Importance of Workplace Air Quality in Fabrication and Welding

Fabrication and welding creates a lot of heat, fumes and dust that contain harmful substances. If the air quality of the workplace is not controlled, the toxic substances can lead to serious illnesses. That’s why there is a need to improve air quality.

Most welders have deteriorated health after working for several years in the industry. Inhaling welding fumes will lead to lung infection. They know the hazards of their work but they do it because the pay is good. Improving the air quality will make their condition better.

Welding must be practiced with care and caution to make it a profitable and safe career. Just like any other profession, the dangers vary depending on the settings. Welding and joining processes create different types of emissions that have different types of hazards.

The level of harmful materials can be reduced to safe levels via proper ventilation and awareness. Inhaling the fumes can cause health problems because the welding environment has chemical known to be dangerous to humans.

Their presence in the welding environment depends on the type of air circulation and what is being welded. The effectiveness of air circulation and cleaning system limits its ability to get rid of the harmful particles in the air. The sizes of the particle are vital variables of the effectiveness of the system.

There are three groups of airborne particle sizes.

Particles 1mm to 0.1 mm can be seen by humans. There are filters available to protect against these particles. Particles that are smaller than 0.1 mm are not visible to the naked eye. You need to use a microscope to see them. Particles that are smaller than 0.001 mm remain floating. Oil mists and dust made during metal processing in welding and fabrication belong in this category. There are specific filters to be used to protect against these particles.
