Delgado College Provides a Hundred Scholarships for Future Welders

Delgado Community College in New Orleans, Louisiana, has a hundred full scholarships up for grabs for its welding school as part of its workforce development partnership with a major industrial gases firm. The partnership is called Praxair Skills Pipeline and gives more than $300,000 for the training of 100 welders in a one year program. This was according to a press release by Delgado. The funds are part of the Global Giving Program of Praxair. Praxair is a Fortune 250 company and one of the biggest industrial gases company in the world. The funds will be used for continuing education, instructionships, and professional development.

Last September 29, Delgado Community College got $2.5 million from the US Department of Labor to expand the college’s training programs for people who are interested in joining the manufacturing and energy industries. The partnership with Praxair is not connected to the Department of Labor initiatives, according to a spokesperson of Delgado.

To launch the Praxair Skills Pipeline initiative, the City Park campus of the Delgado Community College will host an event on October 6 where visitors can apply for a scholarship. Welding artists and welders will be at the event to answer questions from the attendees. The community event will be from 10 am to 3 pm.

Visitors will be served with free food and receive gifts as they learn about how to start a career in welding. There will be an Ask a Welder booth. Visitors will also learn the newest Praxair welding technology and a lot more.

Around 35,000 skilled workers are required in the industrial construction workforce, as well as 51,300 to replace the existing construction workers who are retiring from the industry through 2016. Praxair has been committed to develop a diverse pipeline of talented science, technology, engineering, and math or STEM, and skilled trade workers.
